PAN Card Change Rule 2025: Understand the Entire Process in Simple Hindi

From December 1, 2025, PAN cards not linked to Aadhaar will be inactivated. From January 1, 2026, such PANs will cease being valid for any purpose—be it banking, investment, or tax-related. This rule has been instituted by the Income Tax Department to attain transparency in the financial system with respect to proper identity verification. Now, it is no longer an option; PAN-Aadhaar linking is mandatory.

Whether At All the Requirement for PAN-Aadhaar Linking?

Aadhaar, being the uniquely biometric identity, linking it with PAN would obstruct duplicate/fake PANs, make sure only one PAN is attached to a tax record, and tracking is facilitated. Consequently, the process of filing becomes credible and viable with less fraud, easy KYC, and fast refunds; in other words, these delays do not affect your day-to-day financial services.

Effects of Not Linking

If PAN gets deactivated, then no tax returns can be filed; no document can be verified or any transaction that uses PAN can happen.

No banking or PAN-related transactions would be accepted in loan/credit application by mutual funds and brokerages.

The rates of TDS/TCS might get deducted double, leading to a direct loss in financial terms. It would be necessary to link to reactivate it later with dues and penalties.

Linking Deadlines (Don’t Forget)

  • The last cutoff date for PAN-Aadhaar linking is December 31, 2025.
  • Effective deactivation: January 1, 2026.
  • Aadhaar verification becomes mandatory for new PANs on July 1, 2025.

How to Link PAN-Aadhaar via e-Filing?

  • Go to www.incometax.gov.in (e-filing portal).
  • Choose Link Aadhaar under Quick Links.
  • Fill in the numbers of PAN and Aadhaar, ensuring the name and date of birth match.
  • Verified by OTP (on registered mobile), then submit.
  • The status can also be checked thereafter at any time on the same portal.

Note: If you miss the timeline given here, you will see a late fee on that system—you will proceed only after paying the late fee. Linking won’t be possible unless the details of both documents matched.

How will you check if your PAN is already linked?

Click, Link Aadhaar Status on the e-filing portal.
Feeds PAN and Aadhaar: Status shall show instantly: Linked / Not Linked / Pending.
If pending/unlinked appears, complete the process immediately as higher demand in those final days would subject the link to technical glitches.

Who Benefits?

Tax payers: Easy return filing, quick refunds with negligible hassle over KYC.
Salaried/Professionals/Businesses: Their banking/investments cannot be made smooth without risk of penalties or delays.
System: Cleaning up the databases by clamping down on fake identities & more transparency.

What To Do In The Meantime?

Check your PAN-Aadhaar status today.
If not linked, complete linking immediately via the portal.
If there’s a mismatch of name/date of birth, correct it first; otherwise, the application may be rejected.
Don’t wait till the last week—finish your work in time for uninterrupted services.
